In 1857, the first group of settlers that arrived in this area settled along Chocolate Bayou. Due to the favorable climate and fertile soils, the settlement began farming and growing fruit. They named the settlement Pomona, which comes from the Latin name Pomum, meaning “fruit,” specifically orchard fruit. When the railroads arrived in 1877, the settlement was renamed to Manvel, the President of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. As a tribute to the City of Manvel and its history, the name Pomona was chosen for the new master-planned community.
